Crop Production for Green Roofs Masterclass: How to Get the Most out of your Rooftop Farm

  • Toronto Metropolitan University - Daphne Cockwell Complex (Room 705) 288 Church Street Toronto, ON, M5B 1Z5 Canada (map)

Urban Farm Green roofs have been adopted in cities all over the world to combat the urban heat island effect and manage stormwater runoff, but they also hold great potential to produce agricultural crops. On a quarter-acre green roof, the Urban Farm at Toronto Metropolitan University grows more than 80 different crops, harvesting an average of 7 000 lbs of produce annually for the community. Join Arlene Throness and Ines Lacarne to learn how to operate a market garden on a green roof using ecological growing practices. From crop planning, to cultivation and harvest, to closing the roof for the winter, this masterclass will take you through each stage of seasonal production on an urban agriculture green roof.
